Why should you have to rely on the carriers' TV ads as your only source of information on network coverage? RootMetrics is an independent service focused on giving people the most accurate and complete data about each carrier's network coverage, so you can make informed comparisons. We aggregate actual performance data from thousands of participating cell phone users. It's done automatically and anonymously when you sign up.
Our goal is to give consumers in every location the right information to decide which mobile carrier is right for them. The more data we gather, the more complete our coverage maps are and the more accurate the picture becomes. And by participating in this movement you ensure that we map the areas that matter most to you. So download our app and join the movement to create a more open mobile carrier market.

The Interactive Coverage Map is built on the familiar Google Maps interface that supports a choice of map, satellite, or terrain views. The plus
and minus
buttons let you zoom in and out to different levels. The map can be repositioned either by dragging with the mouse or by using the directional arrow buttons
. You can also specify a location in the Address Search Box at the top right of the screen or by clicking the city links on the start-up screen (To get back to the start-up screen at any time click on the RootMetrics logo in the upper left corner).
The Scoring Dashboard located in the center bottom of the map provides control and scoring of various metrics once you have found a location on the map you want to view. All scoring is determined by a combination of which tab you have selected, which carrier is selected, and the map area you are viewing (including the portion under the Scoring Dashboard which can be minimized with the double down arrow in the upper right of the Scoring Dashboard). Each time you move or zoom the map, select a new carrier, or change the tab, the score is recalculated for that particular metric. In addition with the recalculation the carriers are presented in a new descending rank order. Default view is the RootScore tab and selected carrier.
The color key for hexes and all scoring tabs (RootScore, Signal, and Data) is as follows:

RootScore represents a powerful, proprietary scoring summary and is at the core of RootMetrics. It provides an aggregate score powered by a myriad of key performance indicators that span Signal and Data.
Signal provides a quick look at Signal Quality and by clicking "advanced" allows viewing of decibel levels.
Data provides a quick view of Download and Upload speed. It also translates this into real world use by showing the time for Downloading a song (5 MB) and Uploading a photo (800 KB). In addition by clicking on "advanced" you can toggle between kbps for both Download and Upload.
Each hex provides an in depth level of information tied directly to the tab you are on (RootScore, Signal or Data). As you hover over any hex the border lights up with it's scoring color and once you click you are provided with a pop up of information. In each case you can go deeper by clicking "compare" and see a comparison of each carrier at the hex level. There are clickable "advanced" views when in Signal and Data.
At RootMetrics, we have developed a unique, innovative technology that collects, measures, and analyzes your real-world experience as a mobile user. This patent-pending application, RootMobile, runs in the background on your smartphone and anonymously collects information that allows you to see and compare your carrier's performance with every other carrier. By gathering data from many users on the move, we are able to "crowdsource" that data to provide much greater depth of information than has ever before been possible.
